I'm ten years old, riding beside my Dad in our 1970's Chevy Van.
"It pays to think differently" he says as we drive home over dusty gravel Iowa roads.
Dad had spent the day helping his friend Rich solve a major water flow problem on Rich's farm.
No college education, but Dad was a learner who connected dots.
He used history, geography and math to solve that flow problem - after highly-paid, myopic engineers had failed.

At our house we celebrated plumbers who informed heart surgery techniques. Video gamers who solved molecular puzzles. Wall-paper cleaning products that became Play-Doh.
The plaque hanging in our garage said it all: "Adapt and Innovate".
Our family culture taught me lifelong lessons about sticktuitiveness and interdisciplinary solutions-even when we didn't call it that.
